Common buzzards (Buteo buteo) frequently monitored (once per week). From hatchling to fledgling.
Mobile mast setup, monitoring and removal from territory took no more than 10 minutes per event.
Note that the buzzards are completely unaware and undisturbed during the monitoring events.
Monitored with zoom and stabilizing functionalities at 25-35m from the nest, located at a height of 21m.
Nest monitoring
All over the world specific species of birds are monitored to collect relevant data for research and conservation purposes. It is important to avoid disturbances while at the same time maximizing relevant quality data collection. For high-nesting birds this is a challenge for which I developed a system to solve this. More information about research, nest monitoring in general and the solution for high-nesting birds can be found here.
In 2008 I developed the first system of it's kind and have been updating and upgrading it till this day. All designs have been sourced to the wildlife research & conservation community every since, by me, for free and open-source. The Bill Of Information (BOI) can be found here. The BOI includes the mechanical and electrical designs/CAD-drawings, software code and instructions on how to build, setup and control these systems.
